What is Functional Training?

Functional Training (FT) combines the elements of strength, power, balance, mobility, accuracy and endurance.

This style of workout utilizes interval or circuit training to produce a high intensity workout experience. We incorporate equipment like Kettlebells, Plyo-Boxes, Rowers, Battle Ropes, Olympic Lifting and bodyweight exercises to in-crease calorie expenditure and build muscles.

A functional training workout easily burns 500 calories for a 45 minute workout. It also increases your metabolic rate from between 10% to 25% for up to 48-72 hours. Whether your goal is losing weight or building muscle, you will see results quick with functional metabolic training. Classes allow participants to work to their individual potential.


This class will teach the fundamentals to Workout of the Day (WOD) training, including proper form and function for things such as olympic lifts, squats, rows, kipping, etc., as well as covering specific FTC WOD terminology and exercise names.


Test out allows FTC or Y members the opportunity to skip having to take FOUNDATIONS, by demonstrating the specific skills and form unique to FT workouts and equipment. TEST OUT times are not a part of the FOUNDATIONS class time. TEST OUT runs every 15 minutes and is held Monday & Thursday evenings during SKILLS LAB by appointment only. Participants must properly demonstrate techniques for Cleans, Snatches, Dead Lifts, Presses, Jerks and Squats, in order to skip FOUNDATIONS.

All participants MUST take FOUNDATIONS or TEST OUT before entering the FTC.
