The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA has chosen to spotlight someone who has
touched the lives of many over the last 13 years.

Jack Smith

Jack Smith has worked for the East Y since Dec. 15, 2000. He began working for the Y just prior to the grand opening in January 2001. Prior to his YMCA stint, Jack had a full-time position as the Director of Purchasing at Chemetron Fire Systems. He retired from Ligget and Platt in 1999. At his retirement party Amanda Hesse, COO and Director of the East Y facility, told Jack that he needed to come and work at the Y so that he and his wife would “stay sane”. That comment has stuck with him over the last 13 year. He adamantly says that he is working to stay busy. If you ask Jack why he still works, he will explain that it keeps him going andis far better than sitting at home alone.

Over his 13 years with the Y, Jack has done a variety of job including general maintenance, floor preparation and member services desk. These days Jack is usually seen behind our front desk, answering the phone, handing out basketballs or greeting members. If he is not behind the desk, you’ll see him sitting with our members drinking coffee and discussing the relevant current events!

Jack and his wife, Shirley, enjoy traveling and visiting family when he is not working. They have been married 58 years and have 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. When asked what the Y means to him he says “The Y is a place to stay healthy and meet wonderful people.”

To us, Jack is one of those “wonderful people”.
